High School Program

How it Works

​Year 1-4
Students become LIT members who are part of a "cohort" based on their grade-level. Cohorts become families who push each other, believe in one another and accomplish goals together. Students meet after school weekly based on their cohort and participate in leadership, identity and critical consciousness training. ​In all years of the HS program students participate in the following:
  • Biweekly grade checks
  • Bimonthly family potlucks
  • Annual events like our camping trip, out-of-state college visits, holiday parties & senior scholarship celebrations
Students then participate in the following programs based on their grade-level:

Year 1: 9th Grade
Build the Foundation – Students gain foundational knowledge, skills and mindsets.
  • Tutoring and mentoring elementary school students
  • Community volunteering and college access events
Year 2: 10th Grade
Empower Ownership – Students take initiative and are empowered through leadership roles.
  • Semester-long career internship in desired college major
  • Differentiated summer programming
  • Community volunteering and college access events
Year 3: 11th Grade
Empower Opportunity – Students are empowered to be competitive for college admissions.
  • Standardized test prep
  • College mentor match
  • Social Justice Project
Year 4: 12th Grade
Empower Equity – Students are accepted to four-year colleges and universities.
  • College application support
  • Capstone Project
  • Financial literacy and scholarship awards

LIT has a 100% 4-year college acceptance rate.

Jennifer Ashley, known as "Ashley" at LIT, is a proud first-generation Filipino-American female student who has the dream to become an Oncology Registered Nurse in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was born in the Philippines and her parents migrated to the United States in hopes of a better future. She graduated from East Career and Technical Academy in 2017 and is currently a senior at UNLV as a nursing major. Ashley works part-time at LIT as the Cohort 9 Program Manager and is a Cohort 2 member. She chooses to work at LIT because she is "extremely grateful to have Leaders in Training as my support throughout my academic career and want to give that back to my younger peers."

Miriam Gomez is a proud first-generation Latina student whose dream is to become a child psychologist. Being the only child of 5 born in Mexico, her parents strived to give her the same education as her brothers and sisters in the United States. She graduated from Las Vegas High School in 2018 and now attends Nevada State College as a Psychology major with a minor in Counseling. Miriam works part-time at LIT as an Operations Manager and is a Cohort 3 member.
